Beekeepers seem to be in a perpetual state of angst. Despite our outwardly appearance of calm and the absolute joy that beekeeping brings, worries flow with the seasons and the weather… and a myriad of other triggers. There’s this phenomenon called the June gap, a two -week period of dearth when the hives are full of new brood, are quickly expanding getting ready for a later (hopefully) honey flow and the hives are full of bees that need plenty of pollen and nectar. What will happen to my poor bees during this June gap is a thought hovering away niggling in the back of my mind.
A walk at lunchtime today (June 2020) calmed my fears. Wildflowers are dancing on the neglected verges. The sides of our roads and lane ways may look a bit disheveled these days but long may it last. There are Red and white clover, Daisies, Dandelions, Buttercups, Buckhorn Plantain, Bird’s-foot-trefoil, Alderne and many more are hiding in plain sight. I have no problem (or almost none) now since I have been having fun pointing my phone at unsuspecting plant using a free App someone kindly directed me to for identifying plants: https://identify.plantnet.org/
Happy days.
